Ion exchange water is passed through a cation exchange resin (used as styrene type strong acidic cation exchange resin), water is absorbed by the cationic resin, cationic H+ resin was substituted into the water, and the composition of inorganic acid and corresponding water containing inorganic acid cation; the water through the anion exchange resin (commonly used as styrene anion) OH- were substituted into the water, and the water and H+ with water, that is made of deionized water, pure water, pure water.

Ion exchange method can be used to remove the cation and anion in water, and sodium chloride (NaCl) is used to represent inorganic salts in water:
1, cation exchange resin: R - H+Na+ R - Na+H+
2, anion exchange resin: R - OH+Cl- R - Cl+OH-
The total reaction of cation anion exchange resin can be written:
RH+ROH+NaCl - RNa+RCL+H2O it can be seen that the NaCl in water has been replaced by H+ and OH- on the resin, and the reaction product is only H2O, so it can achieve the role of salt removal.
