V. Chemical Composition Content and Its Effect on Welding
16Mo3 steel plate manganese is an important alloy element in steel and also an important hardenability element. It has a great influence on the toughness of weld metal.
16mo3 steel plate is brittle when Mn content is 3%.
When the Mn content of 16mo3 steel plate is 0.6-1.8%, the weld metal has higher strength and toughness.
What is the effect of sulfur (S) on weldability of 16mo3 steel plate?
Sulphur often exists in the form of iron sulfide in steel and distributes in the grain boundary in a network shape, thus significantly reducing the toughness of steel. The eutectic temperature of iron and iron sulfide is lower (985 C), so the starting temperature of hot working is generally as follows.
From 1150 to 1200 C, the eutectic of iron and iron sulfide has melted, which leads to cracking during processing. This phenomenon is called "hot brittleness of sulphur". This property of sulphur causes hot cracks in steel during welding. Therefore, the sulfur content in steel is generally strictly controlled. The main difference between ordinary carbon steel, high quality carbon steel and high quality steel lies in the content of sulfur and phosphorus.
